EU Spectrum Move Good News for Mobile Broadband

Viviane Reding, the information and media commissioner of the EU, who had appealed for making spectrum available for mobile broadband only sometime back at the Lisbon Council in Brussels was delighted to hear the news that the EU had finally approved the freeing up of the 900MHz band in Europe for advanced data services.

She said that this step would not only bring the next generation technology and services to Europe but would also make it a world leader in mobile broadband technology. The GSM Directive had ordered the said spectrum to be freed up for mobile broadband. The move has been welcomed as a positive one by most people, and the UK mobile broadband providers are likely to be happy about it as well.

The Council of Ministers gave approval to the altered GSM directive, and all that is needed now is to put together all the documents for the proposal to become a law by September 2009. The member countries of the Union would be required to take action within six months after the enactment of the law.

Speaking to Rethink Wireless, Wassim Chourbaji, Qualcomm’s director of government affairs expressed his joy on the news and said that the developments boded well for the future of 3G and mobile internet across the continent of Europe.
