Gynaecomastia Facts
A common condition, gynecomastia, which comes from the Greek “woman-like breast”, has been affecting men for centuries. Enlarged male breast, or gynecomastia, is the excess of localized fat and/or excess glandular tissue in one or both breast. This condition commonly causes low self-esteem, embarrassment, and insecurity. It is estimated to affect 40 to 60 percent of the male population. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), gynecomastia accounts for more than 65 percent of all male breast disorders and consider male breast reduction. The cause of this disorder is generally unknown. The known causes range from heredity conditions, blood pressure medicines, marijuana, steroids, other drugs and chronic diseases. Now there is a popular solution that many men are exploring to correct this disorder.
For most men the best way to reduce or reshape their breast is through surgery. Surgeons such as Dr. Alan Kingdon can correct enlarged breast by liposuction to remove fat, and/or cutting out excess glandular tissue around the breast area. The male breast reduction procedure typically takes only two hours, using general or local anesthesia. Most patients are usually on an outpatient basis.
The results are permanent, although subsequent obesity can cause a gynecomastia-like effect. Therefore continued exercise is always recommended. Depending on how strenuous patients work will determine how quickly they may return to work. Most patients should return to work after a week. The total healing process ranges between 3 to 6 weeks, with minor scarring that disappears in time, and brief soreness from the incisions. Overall, the male patient’s self confidence will increase as a result of a flatter, firmer, more contoured chest.
