Eco-Efficiency — How Every Business Can Go Green and Increase Profits
Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was launched in the mid seventies and initially the company’s specialty was in highly leveraged transactions. Recently they have assembled a remarkable project that focuses not just on profitability, but in addition on how ecologically friendly each of the companies in their portfolio are.
When Henry Kravis from KKR and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) got together only a year ago green issues in the business community became major discussion topic. Issues like greenhouse gas emissions and extreme water consumption are an all-important part of their corporate mission statement. Eco-efficiency (a phrase originally pitched by the WBCSD) is the routine applied to achieve these aims, by using techniques like recycling programs, optimizing data centers for efficiency and waste reduction. Even though the project was an enormous success, people just didn’t recognize how significant the effects were until Ken Mehlman, the head of the Green Portfolio Project and global public affairs, studied the first year’s profits.
Much to everybody’s surprise, Ken learned that this program not only helped in proctecting the local environment, but also increased the profitability of all their companies besides. At the time of writing, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman have managed to get virtually every last business in their portfolio involved in the Green Portfolio Project. When you think about the fact that this portfolio of companies is valued at $86,000,000,000, you can see what an achievement this really was.
The two groups with the assistance of Ken Mehlman are expanding the Green Portfolio project. The Climate Corps Program administrated by the Environmental Defense Fund is a great example of this, it heightens awareness of cost-efficient, environmentally friendly techniques to interns taking an MBA.
In addition, Ken Mehlman has collaborated closely with KKR to create analytical tools and other relevant systems which firms can use to quantify and manage resources. These products let any company to evaluate their progress and identify any underlying issues. The business world has been transformed forever by the work of Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund. These developments have simplified the procedure for businesses in any industry and shown the world that running a profitable business need not entail the hefty price of negatively impacting our planet.
